Retirement Coaching & Financial Advising, a natural partnership
With Sandra Odgers (RBC Dominion Securities)
Retirement is evolving. It’s no longer defined solely by financial readiness—it’s a complex life transition that calls for both practical planning and personal reflection. This is where the partnership between financial advisors and retirement coaches becomes not only valuable, but essential.
In my work, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with progressive financial professionals who recognize that preparing clients for retirement goes beyond portfolios and projections. Recently, I had the opportunity to present to clients of Sandra Odgers at RBC Dominion Securities, speaking to the often-overlooked, non-financial dimensions of retirement—purpose, identity, relationships, and daily structure. These conversations reinforced just how much clients value space to think beyond the numbers.
While financial advisors help answer the question, “Do I have enough?”, retirement coaches help clients explore, “What am I retiring to?” Together, these perspectives create a more complete and meaningful retirement plan.
For many professionals, work has provided more than income—it has shaped routines, social connections, and a sense of purpose. When that chapter closes, the absence can feel disorienting if not thoughtfully addressed. This is where coaching plays a critical role: creating space for reflection, helping clients clarify their values, and guiding them toward a vision for life after work that feels engaging and fulfilling.
At the same time, this work complements—not replaces—the trusted relationship clients have with their financial advisor. In fact, it strengthens it. Clients who are clearer about their goals and lifestyle intentions are better positioned to make aligned financial decisions.
As retirement continues to shift, so too must the way we prepare for it. The collaboration between financial advisors and retirement coaches represents an emerging and powerful approach—one that supports both financial security and life satisfaction.
