The Biggest Financial Fear in Retirement Isn't Running Out of Money

When people think about retirement, they often assume the greatest fear is running out of money. Surprisingly, for many retirees, the bigger challenge is being afraid to spend it.

After decades of working, saving, and accumulating wealth, shifting into "spending mode" can feel uncomfortable. Saving became a habit and a source of security. Suddenly being asked to spend the money you've worked so hard to build can create anxiety, even when you have more than enough.

The unfortunate result is that many retirees never fully enjoy the fruits of their labour. They delay experiences, avoid opportunities, and put off spending on the things that would bring them the most joy and fulfillment.

This is why retirement planning is about much more than finances. It's about understanding your priorities, values, and desires. What matters most to you? What experiences do you want to have? Who do you want to spend time with? What kind of life do you want to create?

I've often said, "Show me what people spend their money on, and I'll show you their values."

When we take the time to self-reflect and become clear about what truly matters, spending money becomes easier. We begin to see money not simply as something to protect, but as a tool to support the life we want to live.

This is the work I do with my clients, and it is incredibly rewarding to help people give themselves permission to enjoy the retirement they've worked so hard to achieve.
